I keep a journal of everything comedy. Here’s my entry for pun:

  • A pun starts with a premise that provides a descriptive definition or illustrative example of thing X, whereby the context of the definition or example alludes to a well-known meaning;
  • The punchline illuminates the alternate definition.

The part of the journal that explored the history of puns and a typology of the variations of puns was destroyed (stolen). ¬†So, until that’s recreated, here’s my favorite pun (at about the 2:00 mark):
